Smart landfill operations in Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah

Jeddah · Makkah · Madinah, Saudi Arabia

LIVE SYSTEMA monitored municipal landfill operation in western Saudi Arabia
THE STORY

Three of the Kingdom's most important cities — including the two holiest in Islam — now run their landfills on AFAQY's smart landfill platform: cell levels, gas emissions, leachate and equipment monitored continuously, turning waste sites from blind spots into managed, measurable infrastructure.

The challenge

Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah carry an extraordinary waste burden. Makkah and Madinah welcome tens of millions of pilgrims and visitors every year, with waste volumes spiking dramatically during Ramadan and Hajj. Jeddah, as the Kingdom's commercial gateway, generates continuous industrial and municipal load. Landfills serving these cities were managed largely by manual inspection — cell fill levels estimated by eye, gas buildup discovered by smell, and environmental compliance documented after the fact.

What we built

AFAQY instrumented the landfill sites with fill-level monitoring across active cells, continuous gas and emissions sensing, leachate level measurement, and tracking for heavy equipment working the cells. All of it reports into one platform, with thresholds per site: when gas readings approach safety limits, or a cell reaches capacity, or leachate levels rise, the responsible team is alerted immediately with the reading, the location and the trend.

How it runs today

Municipal operators start the day with a live picture of every site: which cells are filling fastest, where gas readings are trending, which equipment is operating and where. Planning for new cells is based on measured fill rates rather than estimates, and environmental compliance reporting — once a quarterly paperwork exercise — is generated continuously from sensor data. For cities that welcome the world, cleanliness and environmental safety are now provable, not assumed.

WHAT WE DEPLOYED
  • Cell fill-level sensing
  • Gas & emissions monitoring
  • Leachate measurement
  • Equipment tracking
  • One platform
VISION 2030 ALIGNMENT

Quality of Life, the Saudi Green Initiative, and the Pilgrim Experience Program all depend on cities that can measure themselves. AFAQY deployments give operators the live evidence they need: violations captured, crowds protected, waste handled cleanly — reported in one platform, auditable end to end.
